My name is Yuji Shimoda, Ph.D., a folklorist, ethnomusicologist, and practitioner of Northern Tohoku’s festivals, folk performing arts, and classical martial traditions.
Through my daily life in Aomori, I explore and share the living cultural heritage of northern Japan—from vibrant local festivals to ancient samurai martial arts.

Researcher and Practitioner of Northern Japan’s Living Traditions
Folklorist & Ethnomusicologist
I am a folklorist and ethnomusicologist based in Aomori, Japan, with more than thirty years of experience working with the festivals, folk performance traditions, and classical martial arts of the Tsugaru region in Northern Japan.
My involvement with local traditions began through direct participation in community cultural activities. I learned festival flute performance through the Toriino Shishi Odori tradition in Hirosaki City and have been involved in a wide range of cultural practices, including Tsugaru Neputa, Nebuta, and festivals associated with Mt. Iwaki. In addition to performing, I also craft traditional bamboo flutes used in festival music.
I perform shishi odori and have a long-standing interest in the transmission of traditional Japanese body techniques. This interest has led me to participate in the practice of local classical martial arts and to support efforts to sustain and promote these traditions within the community.
My research focuses on festival music, folk performance traditions, and the documentation of intangible cultural heritage. I am particularly interested in how traditional knowledge, musical practices, performance techniques, and embodied skills are learned and passed down across generations. Alongside my research, I work with local communities to document and support the continued practice of traditional culture.
I also teach courses on regional culture and folklore at a university in Japan, helping students develop a deeper understanding of local history, traditional arts, and cultural heritage.
Through this website, I share stories, photographs, field notes, and essays about the living traditions of Northern Japan. While grounded in long-term research and practical experience, these articles are written for general readers who are curious about Japanese culture beyond the usual tourist destinations.

私は青森県を拠点とする民俗学・民俗音楽学研究者です。30年以上にわたり、北日本、特に津軽地方の祭り、民俗芸能、古武道に携わってきました。
地域文化との関わりは、地域に伝わる伝統文化の実践から始まりました。私は鳥井野獅子踊りで祭礼笛を学び、その後、津軽のネプタ・ネブタや岩木山に関わる祭りなど、さまざまな地域文化の実践に参加してきました。また、祭礼音楽で使用される竹笛の製作も行っています。
獅子踊りの実践者でもある私は、日本の伝統的な身体技法がどのように継承されるのかに強い関心を持っています。その関心から、地元の古武道の実践にも参加し、その継承と普及を支援しています。
研究面では、祭囃子をはじめとする伝統音楽の調査、民俗芸能など無形文化の記録、そして文化継承を支援する活動に取り組んでいます。特に、伝統的知識や演奏技術、身体技法が世代を超えてどのように受け継がれるのかという問題に関心を持っています。
また、日本の大学で地域文化や民俗学に関する授業を担当し、地域の歴史や伝統芸能、文化遺産への理解を広める教育活動にも携わっています。
