Where I Live: Tsugaru, Northern Japan

Tsugaru is the western region of Aomori Prefecture, located at the northernmost end of Japan’s main island, Honshu. Surrounded by the Sea of Japan, the Tsugaru Strait, and the Hakkoda mountain range, the region has developed a distinctive culture shaped by its natural environment, history, and climate.

Tsugaru is widely known for its festivals, folk performance traditions, traditional music, and strong regional identity. Many cultural traditions remain active in local communities today, including the Neputa festivals of summer, religious observances associated with the worship of Mt. Iwaki, and a wide variety of folk performance traditions such as Shishi Odori.

The region is also known for its distinctive local dialect, Tsugaru-ben, as well as its rich rural landscapes. Seasonal observances, shrine festivals, and traditional performing arts continue to play an important role in everyday community life.

I have lived in this region and been involved in its cultural traditions for more than thirty years. Through practice, fieldwork, and research, I have witnessed how local people continue to carry on their traditions while adapting them to changing times.

Through this website, I share the living traditions of Northern Japan with readers around the world, drawing on my experiences of life in Tsugaru and more than three decades of involvement with its festivals, folk performance traditions, traditional music, and classical martial arts.
